On this day bonded with sadness, we note down the meaning of duty. Moreover, C Thomas remembers unforgettable heroes: Roger Staubach, and Cale Foy.
9-11 is a day will should never forget and I feel that there are certain people that we shouldn’t forget in the spirit of this day. Roger Staubach was a Heisman winning qb at the Naval Academy, a 2 time Super Bowl champion quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys and when he retired he had the highest winning percentage of any qb that had started a minimum of 100 games. He still holds that record in the era where a qb could get hit. Tom Brady holds that record but he has been hit less than Floyd Mayweather fighting a reality star. But I digress. Staubach wasn’t just a fine quarterback he was perceived as being a square. He married his high school sweetheart, he didn’t carouse or go out, but instead was a family man during his time in the NFL. The press found him boring. He was a man that believed in honor and duty, this week’s word of the week.
Duty- military service or done from a sense of moral obligation rather than for pleasure.
I believe Roger fulfilled his duty to both the military and to society on both ways. He fought and sat out of the NFL for four years while he fought in Vietnam and served his country, but then he also lived his life with a moral obligation. Searching his entire life and friends, opponents, and co-works from his real estate business that he grew and sold for over $600 million dollars, one theme stands out. No one has something bad to say about the guy. That is a man that did his duty, and we recognize you and thank you and we will continue to tell the story of how we wish more people would conduct themselves like Roger Staubach.
Moving from the Navy to the Navy in remembrance of heroes, we would like to raise awareness of a wonderful story that has been unreported. By raising awareness we don’t’ mean wear a pink shirt, wear a bracelet, or pour an ice bucket over your head. If you aren’t aware that cancer and Lou Gehrig’s disease are awful let me know and I will have G Spot come to you and pour an ice bucket over your head. I mean are you aware of this story. On May 2, 2021, Aircrewman 1 st Class Cale Foy was hiking with his wife and kids in Point Loma California and he noticed that a boat was sinking after crashing into the rocks near the beach. He rushed to help them but there were 5-8 foot waves that were crashing into the beach, but using his Navy knowledge he managed to swim out to their sinking vessel and start pulling people to safety with another serviceman. Fighting 60 degree water, debris, and strong currents, Mr. Foy swam until exhaustion bringing people back to the surviving wreckage until a boat came by that would ultimately transport them to shore and safety. Once on the shore MR. Foy was discovered to be shaking almost uncontrollably due to prolonged exposure in the cold waters. If that boat wouldn’t have come along, the deceased might have included MR. Foy. Out of 32 people out there that day, 3 people lost their life, but who knows how many would have perished if it wasn’t for the heroism of Cale Foy. Mr. Foy was awarded the Navy-Marine Corps Medal for his actions that saved lives that day. Thank you sir. There is a movie about rescue swimmers called The Guardian starring Kevin Costner and Aston Kutcher and in that movie there is this question “What makes a legend?” I think that Mr. Foy answered that question with his actions. A legend is doing something when no one asks you to do it, and doing it well, and at considerable peril to yourself. We try and bring some awareness to the have more grace challenge. It’s a fun way to practice qualities that we admire in other people that we would like to become better at ourselves, making the world just a little bit better. I can’t ask you to do what Mr. Foy did, I can’t do what Mr. Foy did. That’s what makes him a hero. I’d like to see him and his story go viral instead of another dumb social media influencer’s perfect avocado toast for a Tuesday.
I’d like to spend just a few moments here to thank you readers and listeners and let you know that we have a new product that will be coming out midweek called Looking Backwards, Looking Forwards. It will be a short recap of some interesting current events, rate hikes, happenings as well as looking forward to some things that we are anticipating. We realize that we have been a little heavy handed on the finance and inflation and political and finance angles and those require our attention as well, but we also want the ability to talk to you about important people and events from history like Mr. Staubach and Mr. Foy and tell their stories. We are a cooperative where we want to talk about a wide range of subjects and besides G Spot is feeling left out when we talk inflation all the time. Here is Austerity with Also Born on this date.
Also born on this date:
Roger Staubach’s coach on the Dallas Cowboys Tom Landry,
Ed Reed,
Bear Bryant,
William Mulholland (the movie Chinatown was based on his story running the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power),
and Luda.
