G Spot takes a winding road to help us learn perspective regarding the Ukrainian invasion
“Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is not.” Oscar Wilde
G Spot: I was watching the Players golf championship last weekend and was marveling at the unfairness of some players having to play in an incredible wind during round 2 while others got to play in much calmer conditions and it reminded me that life isn’t fair.
I learned this on day 2 of my math class as a child, our teacher on day 1 had told us to always do the homework he assigned, but he would seldom be collecting it. On Day 2, we had a pop quiz, and just about everyone did poorly because very few people did their homework. My classmates complained that it wasn’t fair as most people failed the quiz. My teacher simply said “life isn’t fair” and I told you to do your assignments every day, so I am being fair. You are the ones not keeping up your end of the deal.
Back to the golf tournament, this second round the wind was blowing 40 mph and causing the golf ball to fly way longer or shorter depending on the gusts. The Players championship has a island green number 17 that is quite famous but difficult to hit and on this day there were more balls in the water than a male water polo match. This is an example of life not being fair for multi-millionaire golfers so you can imagine how it is for the refugees fleeing the Ukraine right now.
They are fleeing for their lives, not a paycheck, not a quiz score, but their very survival. After practicing kindness and sacrificing during the Have More Grace Challenge, I have gained a healthy appreciation for what C Thomas is attempting to do here at our cooperative. We are fortunate enough to live in a country that has an abundance of many of life’s basic needs. We have two big oceans that provide us safety from foreign invasion (unlike the Ukrainians), we don’t have nation wide food shortages (which will happen when Ukraine’s crops don’t get planted this year), and we abundant energy so we have cars and electricity (I don’t want to hear about higher prices until you look at European prices). We have so much and we are so fortunate to be living in this country at this time of existence that when I think about life being unfair, I assume that is the rest of the world thinks when they look at us here in the US. We flaunt our reserve currency, police the world, and consume way more than we produce. So the word of the week is perspective.
Perspective- a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.
We can’t control many things in our lives, but we can control our perspective because we can control our attitude. From my perspective, I am feel very fortunate not to have been an adult during Prohibition. I don’t have many rules but #1 – Don’t go to jail. It sure would have landed me in the middle of a moral dilemma had I turned 21 in 1922.
Austerity: G Spot, you would have drunk all through the roaring 20s. Stop pretending you wouldn’t have.
G Spot: Yes, I would have Austerity, but I would have had to do so under the threat of jailtime and I am too pretty for jail, everyone knows this. I am free to imbibe at present without that threat. How lucky we are! That reminds me of what Austerity said last being about being frugal… Those Ukrainians that had to leave their home and go to Poland, I hope they were frugal and had money to rebuild or at least restart their lives. This is a great example of saving for a rainy day, except in their country it is raining missiles. So I feel little sympathy for kids not studying for quizzes, golfers hitting it into the water, or myself having to buy cheaper wine in an effort to be frugal. We have it very good here in America, and if you don’t think so I’d change your perspective because all around our borders are people risking their lives to get here.
“What amazes me is that you can have 10 different photographers in the same room, and you see 10 different rooms. You realize how much of it is the person’s perspective rather than the situation itself.“ Rick Smolan
Insightfully yours,
G Spot Johnson
What I am watching this week… I’m learning about the benefits of the Keto diet. It turns out that a little red wine is allowed. Bacon and eggs, Caesar salad and steak, and redwine. Now, that is a diet I can stick to.
